Calgary obstetrician admits misconduct and closes office

A Calgary obstetrician has agreed to close his office after admitting to misconduct.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta says Dr. Lawrence Demco has admitted to errors following an investigation by the organization.

In a release, the college says some of the mistakes Demco has admitted to include inappropriately inducing labour in a patient, not allowing a patient to have her mother present as a chaperone during a gynecological examination, and disregarding the concerns of a labour nurse about the abnormal fetal heart rate tracing of an unborn child.

The college says Demco has paid them back $32,122.17 to cover the cost of the investigation.

The college says Demco is still allowed to provide coverage for other obstetricians and gynecologists, but he faces several restrictions.

He is not authorized to hold obstetrical privileges at any hospitals in Alberta and he has to have a chaperone for all patient visits involving sensitive exams.
