Fire destroys planes at Lacombe airport

LACOMBE – Three planes have been destroyed after a hangar caught fire at the Lacombe Regional Airport on Monday.

According to the Lacombe Flying Club, no one was injured in the fire and damages are estimated to be more than $1 million dollars.

“There’s no real impact on airport operations or club operations,” said club president Jon Fromm. “It was a privately owned hangar and it’s basically now up to the owner of the hangar and aircraft and the insurance company to get it cleaned up.”

A Facebook video posted on Monday morning showed the fire quickly engulfing the hangar as onlookers watched in disbelief.

“There was no chance of saving the structure or any of the contents. [The firefighters’] main focus was on just preventing the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings. They were successful at that.”

Fromm said that the fire was extinguished by 2 p.m.

The Lacombe Fire Department remains on scene and there’s no word yet as to the cause of the blaze.
